Frequently Asked Questions

How does laser tattoo removal work?

The laser will reach the desired depth of the skin and selectively targets the tattoo ink, breaking it down into smaller particles which will be flushed out by the immune system.

How many treatments will it take to remove my tattoo?

Each person is as unique as their tattoo, but most professional tattoos take between 5-15 treatments. Homemade tattoos usually take less. Laser tattoo removal treatments are spaced out 4-6 weeks apart. The number of treatments can depend on a number of factors, such as:

1-amount of ink used

2-depth of the ink placed in the skin

3-type of ink used

4-location

5-age of the tattoo

6-colors used

7-Size of Tattoo

The healthier you are (drinking water and exercising, abstain from smoking), the more likely you are to get a good result in a shorter period of time.

Can I come back earlier than scheduled for the treatments?

Unfortunately no, the time between treatments is set up so your tattoo can heal properly and your body has enough time to flush the tattoo ink out, naturally. The results, after a treatment, are not always immediate. The body breaks down the ink slowly, usually taking weeks to see the full results, from a treatment.

 Is the process painful?

Yes it can be. Everyone has a different pain tolerance but it does hurt more than getting the original tattoo.  Topical numbing cream is a must. This must be applied 30 minutes prior to procedure. Pain reliever tablets can be taken one hour prior to procedure.

How long will each session of treatment take?

The removal process is actually very fast, but the time of each session will ultimately be determined by the size of the tattoo being removed.  Very Large tattoos might be removed in sections, with time in between sessions, to allow the body to eliminate the ink most efficiently.

Do all the colors of ink respond the same?

No. Black and red inks are the easiest to remove, while light greens and light blues are the hardest. These blues and greens can sometimes take more treatments than other colors. In some cases, these colors cannot  be removed completely.

Will the tattoo remove completely?

In most cases, yes. However, complete removal is sometimes a hard thing to predict, due to all the unregulated tattoo inks on the market. The F.D.A. does not regulate tattoo inks and a lot a lot of tattoo ink manufacturers and artists make and mix their own inks. Sometimes these mixes have metals and other foreign additives, for effect. These unknowns are why 100% removal is hard to predict or promise.

*A lot of permanent highly colored, graphic inks have foreign additives, this may change into other colors or oxidize after the laser treatment.

10. What are the common side effects of laser tattoo removal?

Side effects that Tattoo Undo patients will likely experience, are short-term but worth mentioning. The skin may get red, swollen, and may blister. Blisters can get quite large and at times, cover the entire tattoo. These blisters are superficial and will heal beautifully, but may be uncomfortable for a couple of days. We provide very clear and easy aftercare instructions, for post treatment care. Other noted side effects are hypopigmentation (white spots) ,hyperpigmentation (spots), scarring and infection. Side effects can be minimized by decreasing the laser setting, but more sessions may be needed.

What is the recovery time for a laser tattoo removal treatment?

Most patients can resume their daily activities immediately following a laser tattoo removal treatment. You will need to avoid exposing the treated area to the sun and strenuous physical activities that may affect the treated area.

What can I expect after a laser tattoo removal treatment?

Immediately after each treatment, the treated area may feel sunburned, and we recommend you apply ice to help with this. The treatment area might be swollen, red and very tender. It is really like a burn. Blisters may form. Do not pick at the skin, let it heal naturally. You will ice it down for the first 24 hours and thereafter for comfort. It will crust up and eventually fall off. In the months ahead your body will dispose of the cracked ink by its normal waste disposal protocol.

What if I have dark skin?

Laser tattoo removal is definitely safe and effective on darker skin types, as long as the Q-switched Nd:YAG laser is used.  Tattoo Undo only uses the Q-switched Nd:YAG laser for our removals.  The safest tattoo color to treat is black.

When will I be able to see the results?

It takes about 2 weeks for the body to absorb the ink.  Some people see some difference after the first session, though many do not.  It will be working, however it may take a few sessions to start seeing the results.

Everytime we meet a new client who wants a tattoo removed, an essential question always include the ' number of sessions’. A very basic question, but needs several considerations and an intelligent yet easy to understand explanation. Getting inked is so easy but removing it involves a cascade of processes , time and cost play an important factor.

A group of American dermatologists made this descriptive study which can predict the number of sessions needed to remove the ink. Big thanks to them. This made long discussions , guided and easy to comprehend.

The Kirby Desai Scale is a very good presentation of how Q Switched Nd Yag works to remove a tattoo, and how well and how fast it works. Considerations include : the skin type, the anatomy, the intensity of ink, history of scarring, colors of ink and the quality or design of the tattoo.

Actual clinical procedure entails detailed passes of the laser, the right settings and power, the pain threshold of the patient. Pain with anesthesia cream is bearable. Taking pain reliever tablets before the procedure helps. Laser shots are described as having small , warm needles and rubber band snaps on the skin. Bony areas are more sensitive than the muscular parts.

A good immune system plays a major role to make laser tattoo removal more efficient.

Based from actual results of Skin Wellness Clinic, an eyebrow tattoo can be erased in 3 to 5 sessions, a 10 year old amateur tattoo is hard to decipher after 5 sessions , an intricate design with thin shadow tattoo in 5 to 8 sessions, but embossed colored very graphic ones can take 10 sessions or more.

We  have encountered tattoos which have had cover up made by tattoo artists and left devastating keloids , this will make the laser tattoo removal more complicated and less effective. Cover ups make the darker ink sink into the deeper layers of the skin. Q Switched NdYag will not leave any scarring, but it cannot reverse the scars made by tattoo cover ups.

Let me share with you the Kirby Desai Scale, the BEST AND ONLY predictor of how many sessions will be needed to totally removal a tattoo using the Q Switched Nd Yag Laser.
